| Q: What makes these products better shaving lubricants? | top |
| A: Soap is made from oils, and retains an oily characteristic on the skin until rinsed off. All natural soaps deliver a vigorous lubricating quality that cannot be matched by any other product. Pear Tree Specialty Soap and No. 4 Shaving Soap are natural soaps that are specially blended for exceptional mildness that is crucial for shaving. |
|
| Q: Can I shave with other natural soaps? | top |
| A: It depends on the ingredients used. Most all-natural soaps on the market use hard oils, such as coconut oil and palm oil. Hard oils are solid at room temperature, and give a soap lather. The down side is that hard oils are harsh, causing a burning sensation against sensitive skin; this becomes especially noticeable if used for shaving. Soaps made from hard oils can also dry the skin. |
|
| Q: Can I use off-the-shelf soap? | top |
| A: Most 'soap' products sold in stores are not soap at all; they are synthetic detergents. As such they are not nearly as vigorous in the oily lubricating qualities that an all natural soap can provide. Detergent products cannot match all natural soaps as a lubricant. And synthetic detergents come with a price; over the years of development and production they have added immensely to industrial toxic waste products, including phosphate compounds that have adversely impacted the environment. |
|
| Q: What makes your products so mild? | top |
| A: We use only soft oils, selected and blended for mildness, and we add more ingredients which then nourish the skin. In addition to retaining all the glycerin produced in the soap-making process, we add more glycerin. We then add lanolin and jojoba oils to nourish the skin. We add rosin, which gives our soaps a very smooth moisturizing quality. After all that, we then add sulfated castor oil for even more lubrication. You simply won't find a milder, more nourishing and vigorous lubricating soap. |
|
| Q: Can I use your products for cleaning? | top |
| A: Yes! Our soaps are powerful. They will clean the dirtiest hands, and also because of their exceptional mildness they make great bath and shower soaps. In fact, for someone that goes through a hand-washing process many times a day, the mildness from our soaps will deliver clean hands without the harshness that typically comes from frequent washing. |
| |
| Our soaps kill germs. Natural soaps have a pH around 9.5. Human bacteria exist in much lower pH environments, typically 6-6.5, the range of our skin. Bacteria cannot survive in the high pH range of natural soap. That's one reason natural soaps are so effective for cleaning. Synthetic detergent products don't share this characteristic. |

| Q: How do I shave with No. 4 Shaving Soap? | top |
| A: First, wet your face very thoroughly with hot water. Take two pumps of No. 4 in your hands and rub thoroughly into your whiskers. Then take a third pump and rub that soap into your whiskers. With your hands still soapy, take a very small amount of hot water into your hands and wet your face with that soapy water mix. Now you're ready to shave. Shave down initially, then shave up. Wet your face slightly to re-lubricate (no need for additional soap). Use your hand to feel for areas that need a closer shave (a shave down/shave up process will give you about 85-90% of a good shave). Use your razor over your wet and slightly lubricated skin until you're satisfied with the closeness of the shave. There is no need for additional soap; the residual soap with small amounts of hot water will provide all the lubrication you need at this point to give you a very close shave. The nourishing qualities of No. 4 will keep your face rejuvenated throughout the shave. |
|
| Q: What about whiskers that are several days old? | top |
| A: This is where No. 4 really delivers a smooth shave. First, wet your face very thoroughly with hot water. Take two pumps of No. 4 in your hands and rub thoroughly into your whiskers. Then take a third pump and rub that soap into your whiskers. Now, let this soap dry on your whiskers for about 30-60 seconds (this is a good time for a morning stretch). When the soap has dried on your whiskers, slightly wet your face. Take a fourth pump of soap and rub that into your whiskers. Now you're ready to shave as before. For really tough beard growth, you may add a fifth pump of soap, but that should not be necessary in most cases. |
|
| Q: How long should I use a razor before changing the blade? | top |
| A: A blade usually lasts about 2 weeks. Beyond that the surface of the blade becomes worn and loses its cutting edge. A good practice to follow is to change your blade at the start of a new month, and then halfway through the month. |
|
| Q: Why are these products so watery? | top |
| A: Natural liquid soap has very low viscosity. Usually thickeners are added; we've chosen no to do that, primarily because we didn't want to add anything that wasn't essential. Soaps really don't need that property, and it takes artificial ingredients to provide it. |
|
| Q: How many shaves can I get out of a bottle? |
| A: Each bottle contains 8 ounces or 240 milliliters. Each pump action delivers 1/2 a milliliter. If the recommended 3 pumps are used per shave, that's 1.5 milliliters per shave, and 160 shaves per bottle. That comes out to 4.4 cents per shave. |
